Signary : a system or list of syllabic or alphabetic signs of a language or an ancient script.
The signs of our times may not be of an ideal or our choosing. However, we may still find the times profitable for sowing, watering. Also reaping what others have sown spiritually.
The Greek word kairos (καιρός ) comes to mind. This particular meaning is a time of “opportunity,” “season,” or “fitting time.” A good comparison would be the English idiom: to “strike while the iron is hot.” The Lord can produce fruit, even when the Bible is under assault. Indeed, being so scrutinized even under controversy, the word of God is drawing much more attention to itself than being ignored.
Christians on college campuses, for example, will find themselves assailed over the Bible’s history alone. To be sure, college students are not the only ones who face attacks on the historicity of Scripture. Hollywood, the Internet, apologists for other religions, and some who profess being Christian but lack the evidence bombard us with assaults on Scripture’s integrity. The Bible is the most vilified book on the planet, and yet its stories are regularly found to be historically reliable. Conversely, it is also the most loved and sought after book, and remains the number one bestseller in history.
It may behoove us to take time to find some resources on the historicity of Scripture so that we may be able to answer its critics (1 Peter 3:15–16).
“but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,” 1 Peter 3:15
“But when you are arrested and stand trial, don’t worry in advance about what to say. Just say what God tells you at that time, for it is not you who will be speaking, but the Holy Spirit.” Mark 3:11
Do these references contradict? Not at all! It takes wisdom from above to know when to speak and when to remain silent before our detractors.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.” James 1:5
Loving Father, please give me a hunger to experience your work through the Spirit rather than being skeptical about things I cannot explain.
At the same time, Father, I don’t want to be duped by false emotionalism.
So, please help me ground my experiences in Scripture and in Jesus’ desire to save others.
You are Sovereign, dear Father.
Use every way you deem effective to save all peoples. Remind me that not my way, but Yours be done.
Please use me, as well, to welcome new believers and help ground them in the truth of Jesus, in whose name I pray. Amen.
